How to make your WordPress site mobile friendly?

WordPress allows you to create amazing web pages that not only look appealing but also work perfectly on all devices – desktops and mobile phones.

Yet most users will leave their websites as such without making them mobile friendly, thus loosing on the large volume of potential traffic that comes through smartphones and tablets.

So if you have a WordPress website, use the following steps to make it mobile friendly.

1. Test your Website for Mobile Friendliness

The first step will be to test your website whether it is mobile friendly or not. Copy the URL of your website and paste it in the analyzing box at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/.

The score will indicate whether your WP site is mobile friendly or not. If it is not, then follow the steps given here.

2. Implement a Mobile Friendly WP Theme

Look for themes that comply with responsive web design. It will adapt your website to any screen size and browser.

Many times the existing theme will have an update which is mobile-friendly. So begin by checking the latest update for your theme and whether or not it is mobile friendly.

A good way to test a WordPress theme will be to visit its demo page from a phone or tablet to see how it adapts to it.

Another option is to check themes by using the Mobile Device Emulation tool in the Chrome Developer Tools (by opening the site in Google Chrome). The tool is available in Chrome’s View menu.

If the existing theme isn’t mobile friendly and if its update is also not mobile friendly, you will have to change to a theme that is. WP has a directory of themes where you can search for “responsive layout.”

All the themes displayed in the results will comply with responsive design. If you check the most popular downloads, you will find that most of them are mobile friendly.

3. Make your Current Theme Mobile Friendly

You may want to retain the same old theme for other reasons. Even in such a case it is possible to make your theme mobile friendly by seeking the help of third-party services. You could have them add the functionality using WP plug-in architecture.

Some of the best examples of such third-party solutions include:

  • Jetpack – Provides your website with mobile-friendly features just like that of hosted WP.
  • WP Mobile Detector – It is a plug-in solution for creating a mobile friendly version of your WP site. It has a collection of responsive design themes.
  • WPTouch – It is another plug-in solution that allows creation of a mobile-friendly version without affecting your desktop themes. There are many theme options to choose from.

4. Customize your WP Installation for Mobile Friendliness

You can hire the services of professionals with advanced knowledge of HTML and CSS to customize your exiting WP themes and plug-ins.

You may also get a new mobile theme created from scratch. It is an advanced level strategy and can cost you in terms of both money and time.

Once you have followed any of the above-mentioned methods for updating your WordPress site for mobile-friendliness, make sure to test it using the same Google tool.
